Getting hoof boot fit right: too tight versus too loose

A hoof boot that is too loose rubs, twists and comes off, while one that is too tight puts pressure on the hoof, so the fit sits between the two.

What too loose looks like

A boot that is too big moves on the hoof. That movement causes rubbing at the coronet and heel bulbs, lets the boot twist on turns, and eventually lets it pull off, sometimes lost on a ride.

Rubbing is the early warning. Marks or hair loss where the boot meets soft tissue usually mean the boot is moving because it is too large or the wrong shape.

What too tight looks like

A boot that is too small forces the hoof in and presses on the hoof wall and soft tissue. It can be hard to fit and remove, may distort the hoof's shape over time, and can make the horse uncomfortable.

If you are fighting to get a boot on, or it leaves deep pressure marks, that is a sign it is too tight rather than simply snug.

Where the right fit sits

Growth between trims tightens a boot that fitted at trim time, which is another reason to size from a freshly trimmed hoof rather than a grown-out one.

Measure both hooves, they can differ

Left and right hooves are often slightly different, so a size that fits one may be tight or loose on the other. Measure each hoof and, where a boot is sold per hoof, size each one to its own numbers.

If a hoof falls between sizes, use the brand's guidance on which way to round, and re-check the fit after the next trim as the hoof settles into a routine shape.
